Erg Chebbi is one of Morocco’s several ergs – large seas of dunes formed by wind-blown sand. Sand dunes Erg Chebbi are the highest dunes in Morocco.

The Erg Chebbi dunes are located forty kilometers from Erfoud, near the town of Merzouga. Historically, getting to the dunes was a hardship on Moroccans and other traders passing through Erg Chebbi, as they followed the Saharan Caravan Route to carry salts, gold, slaves, and spices to Timbuktu. Technically all the ergs are within an area of semi-arid Pre-Saharan Steppes and not part of the Sahara desert which lies some distance to the south.
